  4. American college students disgrace their school and flabbergast
  5. Japan

  8.     For more than a week the story went unreported, and for the
  9. reputation of Texas Southern University in Houston that was good
  10. news. Then the Japanese media disclosed that on Dec. 7 (of all
  11. days) members of the university's marching band, on a goodwill
  12. trip to Japan, had turned their Tokyo tour into a shoplifting
  13. spree, making off with $22,000 in loot from stores. One
  14. bystander even claimed that a student had brazenly videotaped
  15. enraged merchants chasing the thieves to their buses.

  17.     When Japanese police told the Americans that the buses
  18. would not leave for the airport until the items were returned,
  19. more than 80 CD players, pocket recorders, miniature
  20. televisions, and electric razors suddenly -- and anonymously --
  21. were handed over to the police. The incident has profoundly
  22. embarrassed the historically black university and given rise to
  23. concerns that the students' behavior will further tarnish the
  24. negative opinion of blacks already held by many Japanese.
